‘Tips Trade Hand to Regina, Re-assign Zipp

EVERETT – The Everett Silvertips announced Saturday trade that will send 1995-born defenseman Tye Hand to the Regina Pats in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft.  The Silvertips also announced that 1996-born defenseman Micheal Zipp has been re-assigned to the Drumheller Dragons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League for his 16-year-old season.  The moves put Everett’s roster at 27 players going into tonight’s preseason finale vs. Seattle at Comcast Arena.

Hand, 17, was selected by the Silvertips in the second round (#40 overall) of the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft.  The 6-3, 190-pound native of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories made Everett’s opening day roster last season, but did not appear in a game before being re-assigned to Drumheller himself.  In 25 games with the Dragons, Hand recorded one assist and 70 penalty minutes.

“With all the young depth we have back on defense right now, it was going to be difficult for Tye to get an opportunity this year,” said Silvertips General Manager Garry Davidson.  “We wanted to find him a place where he’d have a chance to play in the league right away, and we wish him the best in Regina.”

Zipp, who is five days away from turning 16, will return to his home province of Alberta to join the Dragons.  Selected in the fourth round (73rd overall) of the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, Zipp has one assist in four exhibition games for the Silvertips this preseason.  The Edmonton native is expected to

“We’ve re-assigned Micheal to Drumheller so he can get lots of playing time in all situations, which will be good for his development,” Davidson said.  “The return of Ryan Murray left us with some tough decisions on defense, but Micheal is certainly a big part of our plans going forward.  I think at some point this year he’ll be back to play some games for us.”

The Silvertips will close out their preseason schedule Saturday night at Comcast Arena with the second game of the back-to-back set with Seattle.  Opening faceoff is set for 7:05 pm, and all fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations with them to the game for the end of our preseason food drive benefitting the Volunteers of America Everett Food Bank.
