EVERETT – The third day of Silvertips training camp scrimmages took place on Saturday, with two more games on the docket for each of the four training camp teams at the Comcast Community Ice Rink. Each scrimmage featured two 25-minute (running clock) halves. Saturday's scrimmages offered the teams their last opportunities to climb in the tournament standings and reach the first place game on Sunday morning.
Saturday began with the Blue team looking to make up for Thursday's 8-0 loss to Red. Blue created chances and outshot Red 33-22 in total, but it was Red who would come away with a 4-1 win. Matti Jmaeff added two more goals to his tournament lead, while Tyler Fyfe and Josh Winquist also scored goals and Stathis Soumelidis had two assists. Nik Amundrud stopped all 18 shots he faced in goal for Red before Dylan France came in to make seven saves and Quinton Reynolds allowed only one late goal on 13 shots. Stefan Burzan scored the lone goal for Blue. Mario Petit made 12 saves in the first half for Blue.
Green and Grey then met in their second head-to-head game, trading goals from Jan Tesarek (Green) and Reid Petryk (Grey) and Aaron Aragon (Green) to make it 2-1 as the half approached. Green then exploded for three quick goals (Trent Lofthouse, Tyler Sandhu and Tesarek) in less than a minute to take a commanding 5-1 lead at the break. Steven Bryant scored for Grey in the second half, but Lofthouse capped the scoring as Green clinched the #1 seed with a 6-2 win. Lofthouse (2g/1a) and Sandhu (1g/2a) led Green with three points each, while Tesarek (2g) and Ryan Chynoweth (2a) both added two points. Troy Trombley (15 svs) and Blake Pearson (14 svs) combined for the win in goal. Andy Desautels stopped 10 of 11 shots in the second half for Grey.
The afternoon session began with Blue facing Grey, who both had a chance at finishing second with a Red loss in the next game. Blue left little doubt in this one, building a 5-0 lead through 25 minutes on their way to a 6-1 win. Luke Gordon, Nikolas Lynam, Zach McPhee, Stefan Burzan, Patrick Bajkov and Thomas Plese all found the back of the net for Blue, while Cole MacDonald got the only goal for Grey. Kiernan Matsuba stopped all 10 shots he faced in the first half and Mario Petit made 14 of 15 saves in the second.
The last scrimmage of Saturday was one of the best in camp so far, pitting Green vs. Red with a chance at the 1st place game on the line. Red dominated the first half and outshot Green 27-5, but found themselves trailing 2-0 at the break. Blake Pearson stopped all 27 shots he saw and got goal support from Trent Lofthouse and Ryan Chynoweth. Red finally broke through in the second half with goals two goals from Dawson Leedahl, but another Lofthouse tally kept Green ahead 3-2. Josh Winquist netted a penalty shot goal with 5:00 remaining to secure the 3-3 tie and one point for Red, putting them in the 1st place game for a rematch with Green on Sunday morning!
