Silvertips Defeat Kootenay in Kennewick

KENNEWICK – The Everett Silvertips beat the Kootenay Ice 3-2 in their second and final appearance in the Tri-City Americans’ Preseason Tournament Saturday at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.  The Silvertips are now 3-2 in exhibition play with two games remaining prior to the start of the regular season.

Zach McPhee, Luke Gordon and Tyler Sandhu all scored goals for Everett, who outshot Kootenay 29-24 in the win.  Troy Trombley stopped 22 shots in goal to earn his second win of the preseason while playing the entire game.

Everett jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Zach McPhee scored two minutes in, with Manraj Hayer and Ty Mappin drawing assists on the play.  Kootenay tied things up midway through the period on a Luke Philp goal and the game was tied at one through 20 minutes.

The Ice went ahead 2-1 early in the second when Kyle Krabben scored at 1:49.  Kootenay led through most of the period before the ‘Tips scored a pair of late goals in a span of less than 90 seconds.  Luke Gordon tied the game with just under three minutes left in the period and then Tyler Sandhu gave Everett a 3-2 lead 1:27 later.  The Silvertips outshot Kootenay 12-6 in the second and took a 3-2 lead into the third.

That score remained throughout the third as the ‘Tips outshot the Ice 10-8 on the way to completing the 3-2 win.  Mackenzie Skapski went the distance in goal for Kootenay, stopping 26 of 29 shots in total.  Both teams finished 0 for 3 on the powerplay.

The Silvertips will now prepare to complete their preseason schedule with a home-and-home series against the Seattle Thunderbirds next weekend.  The ‘Tips will visit the ShoWare Center in Kent Friday at 7:35 pm before returning home to complete the exhibition season Saturday night at 7:05 pm at Comcast Arena.
