The Everett Silvertips announced Tuesday that defenseman Ryan Murray has been named Captain of the Everett Silvertips for the 2011-12 season. Murray, of White City, SK, served as an assistant captain with the Silvertips in 2010-11.
“It’s definitely a huge honor. I’m really going to try to do the best I can to lead by example and help turn things around next year,” Murray said.
Murray, who turns 18 years old on September 27th, will enter his NHL draft season as a potential lottery pick. Since being selected ninth overall by Everett in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft, the 6’0, 191 pound defenseman appeared with Team Canada at the 2010 World U-18 Championships as the team’s youngest player, and also captained Canada to a Gold Medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament as the youngest player on the team. He participated in the 2010 CHL Subway Super Series and was subsequently invited to Canada’s 2010 World Junior Championships tryout camp. In the second half of the season, he served as interim Team Captain of the Silvertips when Landon Ferraro was sidelined due to injury.
In 70 games with the Silvertips in 2010-11, the second year player recorded 46 points (6-40-46) in 70 games played, along with 45 penalty minutes and a +18 rating. Over his final 36 games of the season, Murray was nearly a point-a-game contributor, tallying 33 points (4-29-33). In 122 career games for the Silvertips, Murray has recorded 73 points (11-62-73) and is Everett’s all-time plus-minus leader with a +51 rating.
“Ryan's leadership has been so evident for the last two years,” Head Coach Craig Hartsburg said. “This just confirms that he will be our leader moving forward, and we look forward to having him as our captain. With the likelihood that Landon Ferraro moves on to play professionally, we would like to thank him for his leadership to our hockey team last year.”
Murray becomes the ninth captain in team history, following Bryan Nathe (2003-04), Mitch Love (2004-05), Torrie Wheat (2005-06), Cody Thoring (2006), Jason Fransoo (2007), Jonathan Harty (2007-08), Zack Dailey (2008-10) and Landon Ferraro (2010-11).
